Bulgaria in Autumn: What to Do in October and November

We are based in Sofia, and at the end of September 2026 we checked what actually works this year: which lifts run, what Bulgaria's Mountain Rescue Service is saying, and the live prices of our day trips and transfers. All prices are in euros, Bulgaria's currency since 1 January 2026.

Autumn in numbers: September, October and November

Bulgaria does not have one climate. Plovdiv is warmer than Sofia, Bansko is colder at night, and at 2,000 m you are already in a small winter. Each cell shows the average daytime high, then the average night low. These are long-term averages, not a forecast: World Meteorological Organization normals for 1991 to 2020 in Sofia and Varna, Weather Spark data for Plovdiv, and station averages for 2000 to 2014 in Bansko and since 2000 on Cherni Vrah.

What this means on the ground: the days get short fast. In early October the sun sets in Sofia at 19:10. On 25 October 2026 the clocks go back an hour and sunset jumps to around 17:30, and by the end of November the sun sets at 16:56. Bulgaria in September, October and November: what changes each month

Bulgaria in September

September is the safest month for high hikes. Sofia is pleasant for walking all day, the sea at Varna still averages about 23°C, and the mountain trails are open, though no longer fully summery: on 23 September 2026 the Mountain Rescue Service said that snow on the ridges is normal at this time of year and that hikers should come prepared for winter conditions.

Bulgaria in October

October is the month of colors and wine. Sofia averages 18°C by day and 6°C at night, Plovdiv is a little warmer, and at about 2,300 m the average high is 5°C with nights below freezing. So is October a good time to visit Bulgaria? Yes, unless you are coming for the beach: it is the month to combine a morning outdoors with an evening in a winery, an old town or a hot mineral pool. High hikes are still possible early in the month on settled days with a guide; from the middle of October every mountain day depends on the forecast.

Bulgaria in November: is it worth visiting?

Is Bulgaria worth visiting in November? Yes, if you plan for what November is: the month between seasons. The high hiking season is behind you and the Bansko ski season has not opened yet. Sofia averages 11°C by day and 2°C at night. What November does well: hot springs and spas, wineries and cities, and two festivals worth planning around, Kinomania in Sofia from 12 to 29 November 2026 and the Bansko Film Fest of mountain and adventure films from 18 to 22 November 2026.

Sukkot and the Jewish holidays

If you are planning around the Jewish holidays: Sukkot 2027 begins on the evening of Friday 15 October and runs to 22 October, with Simchat Torah on 23 October in Israel. In 2027 Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot all fall in October, so September 2027 is holiday free. Mid October is the season of autumn colors and the harvest, which suits Bansko, wine and spas better than high hikes, and as with every holiday break, flights are worth booking early.

Hiking in Bulgaria in October: what is still open and when the mountains turn dangerous

Our rule of thumb is simple: until the middle of October, on settled days, you can go high with a guide. From mid October, and certainly in November, anything above 2,000 m is a winter route with snow, ice and short days, only for hikers with winter gear and experience. For a sense of scale, on the morning of 30 September 2026 the Mountain Rescue Service measured just 4°C at Aleko on Vitosha, at 1,810 m.

The Seven Rila Lakes in October

In autumn, check the Seven Lakes chairlift before every trip. According to the schedule the lift operator published on 30 September 2026, it runs Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 to 17:30 and on Mondays from 12:30, and closes for maintenance on the last Monday of every month, which means 26 October and 30 November 2026. A return ticket costs €16 for adults and €8 for children aged 5 to 12, and children under 5 ride free. No long autumn closure has been announced, but in 2023 and 2025 the lift stopped for seasonal maintenance in early October (in 2025 for about a month from 6 October, announced the day before), and the operator itself called its spring 2026 inspection a semi-annual one, so an autumn closure is possible this year too. When the lift is closed you walk up to the lakes, which adds an hour and a half to two hours to the trek, so in October and November check the operator's site the day before.

What waits at the top? The lakes sit between 2,095 and 2,535 m, and at that height October is almost winter: about 5°C by day and below freezing at night. On a clear morning it is one of the most beautiful days you can have in Bulgaria, without the August crowds. On a day of wind, fog or fresh snow, it is a route you do not start. And after 25 October, with sunset around 17:30, you need to be off the mountain early.

Our guided Seven Rila Lakes trek from Sofia costs €100 per person, the same for children aged 2 to 12. It is a 3 to 4 hour loop with views of 5 of the 7 lakes, ending with a dip in the hot springs of Sapareva Banya. You pay for the chairlift on the spot, and according to the tour description the hot springs cost about €20 more. The trek is guided in Hebrew or English, and in autumn it depends on the weather and on the chairlift that starts the day, so before booking for October or November, check with the host that the lift runs on your date. Vihren and Pirin in October: early in the month only

Vihren, at 2,914 m the highest peak in the Pirin Mountains, is a summer and September goal. The Vihren hut, at 1,950 m, is about 15 km up a paved road from Bansko, and the summer car ban on that road ended on 15 September. Not every hut in the area is open: the Bulgarian Tourist Union lists the Banderitsa hut as temporarily closed. And in autumn the snow arrives: in November 2025, with fresh snow already building up above 2,000 m, the Mountain Rescue Service in Bansko stressed that anyone heading into Pirin needs full winter kit, including crampons, trekking poles, a headlamp and a first aid kit.

We have two day trips from Bansko that start at the Vihren hut: the Vihren summit hike, a 7 to 8 hour day at €35 per person, and the Pirin three lakes hike, 4 to 6 hours at €45 per person. On both, children aged 2 to 12 pay the adult price, and both run from 3 participants; on the three lakes hike a smaller group can go for an extra charge. Honestly, we would book Vihren only for September and the first days of October, and the three lakes until the middle of October on a stable forecast. After that, keep Pirin for next summer.

Vitosha in autumn: no lifts this year

Vitosha, the mountain on Sofia's doorstep, is the nearest nature to the city, but this autumn you will not ride a lift up. According to the mountain's lift company, the two Vitoshko Lale chairlifts closed for maintenance on 28 September and will not run until the winter season, and the Simeonovo gondola is not working at all; the Dragalevtsi chairlift has been out of service since 2018. You go up by car through Dragalevtsi or Boyana, 20 to 30 minutes from the city, or by bus 66, whose last stop is near the Aleko hut. Our short trip to Sofia's center and Vitosha Mountain starts with a tour of the city center, drives up the mountain and costs €80 per adult and €40 per child aged 2 to 12. Check the forecast first: on 3 October 2025 an early snowfall temporarily closed the roads up Vitosha, and Sofia's mayor triggered the BG-ALERT system, which sent a warning to phones across the city.

Autumn colors: when and where

Bulgaria's autumn colors come from beech and other broadleaf forests, and they move downhill from the mountains to the valleys. In most years October is the month of color, and in the valleys it often holds into early November, but the timing shifts from year to year, so do not bank on a specific week. Where to see it: the beech, oak and birch woods of Vitosha, especially above Boyana and Dragalevtsi, the lower slopes of Rila and Pirin, where beech mixes with the conifers, and the Rhodopes, whose villages sit in forest.

Mountain safety in autumn

• The emergency number is 112. The Mountain Rescue Service also answers on 02 963 2000, and the old short number 1470 no longer exists: the Mountain Rescue Service closed it in August 2026.
• Start early and finish before dark, especially after 25 October.
• Layers, a rain jacket, a hat, gloves and shoes with good grip. After snowfall, without crampons and experience, do not go above 2,000 m.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back, and carry a charged phone with a spare battery.

Bansko in autumn: what is open in October and November

Bansko in autumn is a different town: quiet, no queues, with peaks starting to turn white above it. At 925 m the days are still pleasant, averaging 17°C in October and 11°C in November, but the nights are cold, at 5°C and 2°C. The gondola to Banderishka Polyana runs from 7 September to 30 November 2026 on weekdays only, one ride up at 8:00 and one down at 16:30, so it only works if you plan a full day up there.

What to do in Bansko in October? A wine day on our trip to Melnik and the Rozhen Monastery, €60 per person, children aged 2 to 12 included, with a historic winery and a wine tasting included (lunch at the restaurant is paid separately), and an evening in your hotel's pool and spa. The trip runs from 3 participants, and a couple can go for an extra charge. If you are in Bansko in November, between the 18th and the 22nd, catch the Bansko Film Fest of mountain and adventure films, which celebrates its 25th edition this year. Almost all of our hotels in Bansko have a pool or a spa, among them an award winning spa resort, an aparthotel with bio pools and a good value spa hotel with apartments for bigger families.

Sofia to Bansko takes about 2 hours by car, and about 2 hours 10 minutes from the airport, a little longer in snow. A transfer from Sofia Airport to Bansko costs from €159 per car for up to 4 passengers, and from €222 for a van for up to 8.

What to do in Bulgaria in October and November when it rains

Hot mineral pools in Sapareva Banya

Sapareva Banya, about an hour and a quarter from Sofia, is our answer to a gray day. It has a geyser whose water bursts out at 103°C, and hot mineral pools that feel best when it is cold outside. Three of our hotels in Sapareva Banya are built for exactly this: a hotel with ten mineral pools and dinner included, a boutique spa hotel with a warm outdoor mineral pool all year, and a small spa hotel near the geyser with a rooftop jacuzzi. Harvest season: wine in Melnik and Sofia

Melnik's local grape, Shiroka Melnishka, ripens late and is usually picked in the second half of October, so an October visit lands right in the harvest. Two dates are worth marking: 26 October, International Mavrud Day, which celebrates one of Bulgaria's oldest grape varieties and is marked during October with tastings and wine festivals in Plovdiv and other cities, on dates that change from year to year; and 27 and 28 November 2026, when DiVino.Taste, the big show of Bulgarian wine, takes over Sofia's Inter Expo Center, open to the public on Friday from 15:00 and on Saturday from 11:00.

Plovdiv and Sofia: museums, cinema and young wine

On a rainy day Plovdiv is a good bet: our Plovdiv trip with the vintage car museum leaves from Sofia, combines an indoor museum with a walk through the Old Town, and costs €95 per adult and €50 per child aged 2 to 12, plus the museum entrance, about €15 per person, paid on the spot. In November, Plovdiv's Old Town also hosts the Young Wine Parade; its 2026 dates have not been published yet, but in recent years it has been held over a weekend in the second half of November (in 2025 it opened on 21 November). In Sofia itself a rainy day means museums and cafes, and from 12 to 29 November 2026 also Kinomania, the film festival now in its 40th edition, with screenings at the National Palace of Culture. Sample itineraries for Bulgaria in autumn

5 days for a couple in October: Bansko, Pirin and Melnik

1. Day 1: land in Sofia and drive straight to Bansko, about 2 hours 10 minutes, from €159 per car. Evening in the old town.
2. Day 2: the Pirin three lakes hike if the forecast is stable (€45 per person). If it rains: a morning in the spa and an afternoon walk around town.
3. Day 3: Melnik and the Rozhen Monastery, a wine tasting and a traditional lunch (€60 per person, lunch extra).
4. Day 4: a free day in Bansko with pool, spa and a local tavern, or, in early October, the Vihren hike for the fit (€35 per person).
5. Day 5: back to the airport, again about 2 hours 10 minutes and from €159 per car.

The math for two, at the per person prices: the three lakes and Melnik come to 2 × 45 + 2 × 60 = €210, and the two transfers to €318 per car, €528 in total before accommodation and meals. Vihren adds €70. All three trips run from 3 participants, so a couple on its own pays extra on the three lakes and Melnik trips, and Vihren needs a group.

6 days for a family: Sofia, Vitosha and Plovdiv

1. Day 1: land and take a transfer from the airport to central Sofia, about 25 minutes, from €30 per car for up to 4 passengers, or from €50 for a van for a family of 5 or more. A short walk in the center in the afternoon.
2. Day 2: Sofia's center and Vitosha Mountain (€80 per adult, €40 per child).
3. Day 3: Plovdiv and the vintage car museum (€95 per adult, €50 per child), perfect on a rainy day too.
4. Day 4: a slow city day: a museum, a park and a cafe.
5. Day 5: the Seven Rila Lakes, only in early October, when the lift is running and the forecast is stable, and with children who walk well, from about age 8 (€100 each). If not, another day in the city.
6. Day 6: transfer to the airport, from €30 per car.

The math for two adults and two children aged 2 to 12, using the adult and child prices: Vitosha 2 × 80 + 2 × 40 = €240, Plovdiv 2 × 95 + 2 × 50 = €290, and the two transfers €60, €590 in total, plus the Plovdiv museum entrance, about €15 per person on the spot. The Seven Lakes add €400 (4 × 100, because on this trip children pay the adult price), plus the chairlift on the spot: €16 per adult and €8 per child. The November version

In November, swap the high days for warm ones. For a couple: instead of Pirin and Vihren, two nights in one of the spa hotels in Bansko or Sapareva Banya, a wine day in Melnik, and a film night at the Bansko festival if you are there between 18 and 22 November. For a family: instead of the Seven Lakes, a night or two in a hotel with mineral pools in Sapareva Banya, plus another day in the city. Vitosha is still possible on a clear day, since you drive up, but there are no lifts and snow is possible.
