Sofia with Kids: Things to Do, Prices and a 3-Day Plan
Sofia with kids: the science museum, zoo, parks and Vitosha, with prices and hours checked in October 2026, winter indoor ideas and a 3-day family plan.

Sofia with kids works better than most parents expect. The city has a hands-on children's science museum, a zoo with more than 1,000 animals, a natural history museum right in the centre, big green parks and Vitosha mountain rising straight above the streets. In winter you plan the day around indoor places; in summer around the zoo, the parks and Vitosha. Most tickets cost €2.50 to €6.50, and small children get in free almost everywhere. We checked every price and opening hour on the official sites in October 2026. All prices are in euro, which Bulgaria adopted on 1 January 2026.

In short: with babies and toddlers, go for the zoo, the parks and Muzeiko's toddler corner. Kids aged 5 to 12 are exactly who Muzeiko and the natural history museum are built for. Older kids and teenagers will get more out of a day in the mountains or the caves outside the city.
Sofia with kids in winter: indoor ideas for cold days
From November to March Sofia is cold, and snow sometimes falls in the city itself. Our month by month forecast is in the Sofia weather guide. These are the places that rescue a cold or rainy day.
Muzeiko, the children's science museum
Muzeiko is Sofia's children's museum and the best answer to a rainy day: 13 exhibition zones and more than 130 interactive games. The museum says it suits ages 5 to 12 best, and there is a toddler corner with a baby changing room next to it. Plan 2 to 4 hours.
- Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Closed on Mondays and on 24, 25 and 31 December.
- Tickets: €6.14 for adults and children from age 2; under 2 free. The Happy Hour ticket from 16:00 to 18:00 costs €5.11. The mini planetarium costs €1.02 extra and suits children over 6.
- Getting there: next to G.M. Dimitrov metro station on lines M1 and M4.
- Strollers and food: strollers are allowed among the exhibits, with stroller parking and lockers. Only water and baby food are allowed in the exhibition areas; the café keeps museum hours.
- Children under 12 must be with an adult for the whole visit.
National Museum of Natural History
The National Museum of Natural History sits at 1 Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard, in the heart of the city, so it fits easily into a morning in the centre. It is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:30. Adults pay €6.50, children aged 3 to 6 €2.50, pupils and students €3.50, and under 3s go free. A family ticket for two parents and two children costs €16. On 24 and 31 December it opens only from 10:00 to 13:00, and it is closed on 25 December and 1 January. More family friendly museums are in our guide to the best museums in Sofia.
Indoor play centres in the malls
This is how local families spend a winter afternoon: a mall with a play centre and a café for the parents.
- Funtopia at Paradise Center: level 3, with trampolines, a ninja course and soft play for ages 0 to 3. Open Monday to Friday 12:00 to 21:00, weekends and holidays 10:00 to 21:00. A single visit starts at €11. The climbing zone is currently closed for renovation. The mall is linked by an underpass to Vitosha metro station on line M2.
- Fun Ring Park at Sofia Ring Mall: floor 1, behind the information desk, with a separate maze for ages 0 to 3, an inflatable trampoline, an indoor sandpit, bumper cars and arcade games. Open daily 10:00 to 22:00. You pay per attraction and sign a declaration; check prices at the desk. The mall is on the ring road, so a car or taxi is easiest.
Ice skating and a day in the snow
Last winter Ice Park Sofia ran in the Prince's Garden, between Eagles' Bridge and Sofia University: a rink of about 4,000 m², the biggest in the city, with skate rental. It first opened in 2022, but dates and prices for the 2026/27 season have not been published yet, so check before you go. Want real snow? Our winter day in Borovets with thermal springs leaves Sofia for a full day, is rated easy and suits all ages. It costs €85 per adult and €45 per child aged 3 to 12, with infants under 2 free.
Visiting in December? Sofia's Christmas markets are covered in our Sofia Christmas markets guide.
Sofia with kids in summer: the zoo, parks and Vitosha
From spring to mid autumn Sofia is green and easy to enjoy outdoors, and in October the zoo still keeps its summer hours.
Sofia Zoo
Sofia Zoo has more than 1,000 animals from 220 species and is open every day of the year, holidays included. From April to October the ticket office is open 9:30 to 18:00 and you can stay until 19:00. From November to March the ticket office is open 8:30 to 16:30 and you can stay until 17:00, so in winter go in the morning.
- Tickets: €5.11 per adult, €2.56 per child aged 3 to 18, under 3 free. A family ticket for two parents and one child costs €10.23, and for two parents with two or more children €12.78, which saves a family of four €2.56.
- Getting there: metro line M2 to Vitosha station, then bus 64, 66, 68, 83, 88, 98, 120, 288 or 805 to the west entrance at 1 Srebarna Street.
- Tip: the same metro station connects to Paradise Center, so the zoo and Funtopia make one easy day with lunch in between.
Borisova Gradina and other city parks
Borisova Gradina is Sofia's biggest and best known park, stretching between Eagles' Bridge and Vasil Levski Stadium. It has wide stroller friendly paths, lawns, playgrounds and two lakes. The part near the centre is landscaped, and beyond Peyo Yavorov Boulevard it turns into forest. South Park (Yuzhen Park) is another good choice, with lawns and playgrounds.
Kambanite, the Bells park
The Bells monument is a place children remember: built in 1979 for an international children's assembly, it holds dozens of bells donated by countries from around the world, and visitors can ring them. Around it is a green park for picnics and running about, and entry is free. It lies on the edge of the city beyond Business Park Sofia, about 14 km from the centre: take the metro to Business Park station and walk on, or take a taxi.
Vitosha mountain with kids
Vitosha rises right above Sofia and is perfect for half a day of fresh air, short trails and views over the city. Without a car, the simplest option is our half day tour of central Sofia and Vitosha: a short city walk, then easy trails on the mountain. It costs €80 per adult and €40 per child aged 3 to 12, with infants under 2 free. It depends on the weather, and the mountain is always colder than the city, so bring a warm layer even on a mild day.
A water park in Sofia
Bulgaria's big water parks are on the Black Sea coast, but Sofia has one too: the municipal aquapark in Vazrazhdane Park, 4 Bulgarska Morava Street. Outside there are five pools from 15 cm to 1.4 m deep and eight slides for anyone taller than 130 cm. It opens only in summer, 9:00 to 19:00; check the season dates and prices with the venue before you go.
Day trips from Sofia with kids
With kids who walk well, one day out of the city is worth it. Our caves and river eco trip visits Prohodna cave with its famous "Eyes of God", ancient caverns full of stalactites and a riverside trail. It is a full day at a moderate level, €85 per person, children and babies included. More ideas are in our day trips from Sofia guide.

- Strollers: the historic centre is compact and most sights are within walking distance, but the yellow paving stones are hard work for small wheels. A stroller with big wheels or a baby carrier makes life easier. Most metro stations have lifts.
- Public transport: according to Sofia's Urban Mobility Centre, which runs the city's public transport, children under 14 ride free with a free children's travel card. The card is issued only to families with a registered address in Bulgaria, and the centre publishes no separate rule for visiting children, so ask at a ticket office before you ride. With a stroller the metro is easiest, outside rush hour.
- From the airport: metro line M4 reaches Terminal 2, but with kids and luggage our Sofia airport to city centre transfer is simpler: from €30 per car for up to four passengers, or €50 for a van for up to eight. The driver meets you in the terminal with a name sign, waits up to 60 minutes at no extra charge, and you can request a child seat when you book.
- Food: not every restaurant has a kids' menu, but Bulgarian food is easy for children: meatballs, soups, chips with grated white cheese and warm banitsa from the bakery. Mall food courts offer plenty of choice for a quick lunch with little ones.
- Baby supplies: baby food, formula and nappies are sold in supermarkets and pharmacies across the city.
- Where to stay: looking for a hotel with a pool or a family room? See our guide to hotels in Sofia.
A 3-day family itinerary for Sofia
This plan works in winter and summer, at a pace that suits kids: one big activity in the morning, one small one in the afternoon.
Day 1: arrival and Muzeiko
Land, check in and rest. In the afternoon head to Muzeiko; arrive after 16:00 and you pay the cheaper Happy Hour price. A quiet evening near the hotel.
Day 2: the city centre
Start with a small group walking tour of Sofia: up to two hours, in English, €18 per adult and free for children up to 12. Then walk on to the National Museum of Natural History, and spend the afternoon in Borisova Gradina. In December, swap the park for the Christmas market and the ice rink, if it has opened.
Day 3: the zoo and Paradise Center, or Vitosha
Morning at the zoo, then back to Vitosha metro station and into Paradise Center for Funtopia and lunch. On a fine day, swap this for Vitosha or Kambanite park. Got a fourth day? The Borovets snow day in winter, the caves in summer.
For a general city plan without the kid focus, see Sofia in 3 days, and for the whole city our complete Sofia travel guide.
The bottom line
Sofia is not built around one big theme park, but three good days with kids cost little here: most entry tickets are €2.50 to €6.50 and the parks are free. In winter build the day around Muzeiko, the natural history museum and the malls; in summer around the zoo, the parks and Vitosha. Everything you can book in the city is in all experiences in Sofia.
