Shopping in Bulgaria: Best Malls in Sofia and Beyond

Shopping in Bulgaria: the best malls in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas, which brands are here (no Primark), what to buy, Black Friday and tax free tips.

Shopping in Bulgaria: Best Malls in Sofia and Beyond

Shopping in Bulgaria mostly means Sofia: the biggest malls, the widest choice of international brands and Vitosha Boulevard, the city's pedestrian shopping street. Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas each have one or two malls with most of the familiar chains, while the mountain and beach resorts sell little beyond gear and souvenirs. Two facts save a lot of searching: there is no Primark and no Uniqlo anywhere in Bulgaria, but there is Sephora, in Sofia and Plovdiv. Since 1 January 2026 Bulgaria uses the euro, so every price tag is in euros.

In this guide8 sections

This guide is built from the store directories and opening hours the malls publish on their own websites, checked in the first week of October 2026. Shops open and close all the time, so if one brand is the reason for the trip, check the mall's site before you go.

What to buy in Bulgaria

The malls carry the same chains you know from home. The things worth packing are the ones that are genuinely Bulgarian:

  • Rose oil and rose cosmetics. Bulgarian rose oil, distilled from Damask roses, has been a protected geographical indication in the EU since 2014. Souvenir shops and pharmacies also sell rose creams, soaps and rose water. A small vial of pure oil and a cosmetic "with roses" are very different products, in price too.
  • Wine. Bulgaria makes wine from local grapes such as Mavrud and Melnik. Buy it at a winery or a wine shop rather than at the airport; our guide to Bulgarian wineries covers where to go.
  • Rakia and honey. The Balkan fruit brandy and local honey are sold in every supermarket and market. Bottles and jars belong in checked luggage.
  • Troyan pottery. The town of Troyan is known for its pottery tradition, and its Museum of Crafts holds more than 27,000 objects. Pottery in this style is sold in souvenir shops in all the big cities.
  • Embroidery and folk souvenirs. Embroidered tablecloths, blouses and dolls in traditional dress are easy to find in city centre souvenir shops.

We do not quote item prices here, because they vary from shop to shop.

Shopping in Sofia

Shopping in Sofia comes in two forms: a pedestrian street in the centre and big malls outside it. Every mall whose hours we could check opens seven days a week, Sundays included.

Vitosha Boulevard, Sofia's shopping street

Vitosha Boulevard, "Vitoshka" to locals, starts at Sveta Nedelya Square and runs south. The stretch between Patriarch Evtimiy Boulevard and Alabin Street has been fully pedestrian since 2015 and is lined with fashion stores, luxury labels, cafés and restaurants. Serdika metro station sits at the northern end and NDK (National Palace of Culture) station at the southern end. It is the place for a stroll and some window shopping; for the widest choice, head to the malls.

To stay on Vitosha Boulevard itself, Grand Hotel Millennium at 89B and Rosslyn Central Park Hotel at 106 are both at the southern end, by the National Palace of Culture, and Sofia Balkan Palace on Sveta Nedelya Square, at the boulevard's northern end.

If you only have time for one, Paradise Center is the easiest: it is by a metro station and has both Zara and Sephora. Serdika Center offers a similar mix on the east side of the city.

Zara, Sephora, Primark, Uniqlo: which brands are in Bulgaria

  • Zara: yes. In Sofia at Paradise Center and Serdika Center, in Plovdiv at Plovdiv Plaza, in Varna at Grand Mall and in Burgas at Galleria Burgas.
  • Sephora: yes. In Sofia at Paradise Center and Serdika Center, and in Plovdiv at Plovdiv Plaza. We did not find it in the directories of the Varna and Burgas malls we checked.
  • Primark: no. Primark's own list of countries includes Romania but not Bulgaria.
  • Uniqlo: no. Its parent company's store list shows Uniqlo in 11 European countries, and Bulgaria is not one of them.
  • IKEA: stores in Sofia (on the ring road at 216 Okolovrasten Pat, and at Mall of Sofia), Varna and Veliko Tarnovo, with order points in Plovdiv and Burgas.
  • Decathlon: operates in Bulgaria, but it is not in the directories of the malls in the table; its Bulgarian website lists the stores.

Sofia outlet, markets and cheap shopping

Outlet: we could not find an official, up to date website for an outlet centre in Sofia this week, so we are not sending you to one. If you want a particular brand's outlet store, check that brand's Bulgarian website first.

Markets: the Women's Market (Zhenski Pazar) on Stefan Stambolov Boulevard, close to the centre, is a working market for fruit, vegetables and household goods, not designer labels. The Central Market Hall (Tsentralni Hali) at 25 Maria Luiza Boulevard opened in 1911 and reopened in May 2024 after a major renovation, with a supermarket and a zone showing the remains of ancient Serdica. For December, see our guide to the Sofia Christmas markets.

Black Friday in Sofia

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, and Bulgarian retailers take it seriously: in November 2025 Mall Plovdiv alone published a string of store promotions, H&M among them, and some sales started in mid November. The same chains have stores in Sofia's malls, so expect similar offers there, and a late November trip catches both the sales and the opening of the Christmas markets. One useful rule: under EU law, a shop announcing a discount must show as the previous price the lowest price it charged in the 30 days before the reduction.

A personal stylist in a Sofia mall

If a new wardrobe is part of the plan, a personal styling experience in Sofia gives you about three hours with a professional stylist in one of the city's leading malls: looks matched to your style, body shape and needs, and help choosing clothes and accessories. It costs €149 per person, for up to two women aged 16 and over, in English. Book at least 48 hours ahead; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

To get your bearings first, the Sofia small group walking tour spends up to two hours among the churches, seats of power and neighbourhoods of the centre. It costs €18 per adult, and children aged 3 to 12 go free.

From the airport to Sofia's shops

Sofia Airport is close to the city, and the metro makes Sofia easy to get around. If you land with suitcases and want to go straight to your hotel, a private transfer from Sofia Airport to the city centre starts at €30 per car for up to four passengers.

Shopping in Plovdiv

Plovdiv has three malls; the main pedestrian street and the Kapana district with its small independent shops are covered in our city guide. For the chains:

  • Plovdiv Plaza, 3 Dr Georgi Stranski St, daily 10:00 to 21:00. This is the Plovdiv mall with Zara, Sephora, H&M and Bershka, plus an IKEA order point.
  • Mall Plovdiv, 8 Perushtitsa St, daily 10:00 to 21:00. Its directory includes H&M, Bershka, New Yorker and Levi's.
  • Markovo Tepe Mall, 54 Ruski Blvd in the city centre, daily 10:00 to 21:00, with Douglas, Tom Tailor, Skechers and Pandora.

Plovdiv is an easy day trip from Sofia: a private transfer from Sofia to Plovdiv starts at €145 per car, and you can browse hotels in Plovdiv if you want to stay over.

Shopping in Varna

Varna has two big malls worth knowing:

  • Grand Mall Varna, 2 Andrey Saharov St, daily 10:00 to 22:00. This is where the Inditex brands are: Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius and Oysho, along with H&M, Nike and Adidas.
  • Delta Planet, 185 Slivnitsa Blvd, daily 10:00 to 21:00. It houses Varna's IKEA store, plus Mango, Reserved, New Yorker and Douglas.

Sephora does not appear in either mall's directory. To stay in town: hotels in Varna.

Shopping in Burgas and Sunny Beach

If you are staying in Sunny Beach and want a proper mall, go to Burgas; the road from Burgas to Nessebar, next to Sunny Beach, is about 36 km. Burgas has two malls:

  • Galleria Burgas, 6 Yanko Komitov St, daily 10:00 to 22:00, with Zara, H&M, Bershka, Massimo Dutti, Nike, Reserved, Douglas, Starbucks and an IKEA order point.
  • Burgas Plaza, 31 Transportna St, daily 10:00 to 22:00, with Intersport, New Yorker, Douglas, JYSK, Pandora and Starbucks. No Zara here.

There is no Primark in Burgas, as in the rest of Bulgaria, and Sephora does not appear in either mall's directory. For a base in town, see hotels in Burgas.

Shopping in the resorts

In Bansko and Borovets, shopping mostly means ski rental and gear shops plus a few souvenir stores. Buy clothes, jackets and shoes in Sofia before you head up. Several travel guides describe a Sunday morning farmers' market in Bansko with fruit, vegetables and honey, but we could not confirm its hours from an official source, so ask at your hotel.

Tax free shopping in Bulgaria for non-EU visitors

Visitors who live permanently outside the EU can claim back VAT on goods they buy in Bulgaria and take home. Bulgaria's standard VAT rate is 20%. According to Bulgarian Customs, the conditions are:

  • Minimum: the VAT on a single invoice must be at least 50 leva or the euro equivalent. At the official conversion rate that is about €25.56 of VAT, which means a purchase of roughly €153 or more on one invoice.
  • Not covered: alcoholic drinks, tobacco products and liquid fuels, so wine and rakia do not qualify.
  • Time limit: the goods, bought for personal use, must leave the EU in unchanged condition by the last day of the third month after the month of the invoice.
  • Paperwork: ask the shop for the invoice and a refund application form. At your EU exit point, before you leave, show them with the goods to a customs officer, who signs and applies a personal customs stamp and the official customs seal.
  • Payment: the refund is paid by the agent or the shop, not by customs, no later than the end of the month in which six months from the invoice date run out.

The customs explanation page was last updated in 2023 and still quotes leva, so ask the shop before you pay whether it handles tax free refunds.

FAQ

Are Sofia's malls open on Sundays?

Yes. Every Sofia mall we checked publishes the same hours for all seven days: Paradise Center and Serdika Center open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, Mall of Sofia and Park Center from 10:00 to 21:00. Hours can change on Bulgarian public holidays, so check the mall's website. Vitosha Boulevard is busy all week, but each shop there sets its own hours.

Which mall in Sofia has both Zara and Sephora?

Two: Paradise Center at 100 Cherni Vrah Blvd, beside Vitosha metro station, and Serdika Center at 48 Sitnyakovo Blvd. Both also have H&M, Bershka, Mango and Massimo Dutti. Outside Sofia, Plovdiv Plaza is the only mall where we found both brands. Grand Mall Varna and Galleria Burgas have Zara, but Sephora is not in their directories.

The bottom line

Shopping in Bulgaria comes down to a day in a Sofia mall and a walk along Vitosha Boulevard, plus one mall if you are in Plovdiv, Varna or Burgas. Do not plan around Primark or Uniqlo, because they are not here. What is worth bringing home is rose oil, wine and pottery, and if you would like a stylist by your side, we can book one in Sofia.
