How to get from Sofia Airport to Bansko
Flying to Sofia for a ski week in Bansko? The real question is what happens after you land. This transfer takes you straight from the terminal to your hotel in Bansko, about 158 km and 2 hours 5 minutes, with no stop in the city.
The Bansko lift company has published the winter season as 1 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, and it can move the dates with the snow. In those months the last part of the road runs through the mountains, and snow can make the drive longer. If you drive a rental car, you need good winter tyres and some confidence on mountain roads.
Without a car, the way is metro and bus. From Terminal 2, metro line M4 runs to Serdika, where you change to line M2 for Central Railway Station, right next to Sofia Central Bus Station; one contactless tap of €0.80 covers the metro with the change within 30 minutes. From Terminal 1, a free shuttle runs to Terminal 2 day and night. Five buses a day leave for Bansko, at 08:30, 09:45, 11:25, 14:00 and 16:45, for €14, and the ride takes about three hours. If your flight lands in the afternoon or evening, the last one has gone.
The transfer costs €124 per car, not per person. A car takes up to 4 passengers and 2 suitcases, so with skis and boot bags on top of the suitcases, book the large van, up to 8 passengers and 8 suitcases. Give your flight number when you book, and the driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Child seats can be requested when booking, with each child's age and height. You pay 20% online by card and the rest in cash to the driver at the end of the ride; bring the exact amount, as drivers need not give change.
The difference between this transfer and the one from central Sofia is the pickup point and the price: from the airport €124 per car, from the city €121 per car. If you are spending a night in Sofia first, the city transfer suits you better. The route also runs the other way, from Bansko back to the airport for your flight home.
