Spa Hotels in Bulgaria: Mineral Pools, Luxury, Adults Only

Spa hotels in Bulgaria by area: Bansko, Borovets, Sapareva Banya, Kazanlak and the winter coast. Mineral pools, age rules and what to ask first.

Spa Hotels in Bulgaria: Mineral Pools, Luxury, Adults Only

Spa hotels in Bulgaria come in two kinds: hotels built on a hot mineral spring, where the pools fill with natural thermal water, and hotels with a good heated pool and sauna circuit. Choose by that, by how far you want to drive from Sofia, and by how much you need peace and quiet. From the hotels we sell, the short answer: for the most luxurious spa in Bansko, Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena Bansko, voted Bulgaria's best hotel spa for 2026. For mineral water on a grand scale, Kings' Valley near Kazanlak, with 8 mineral pools. For an adults only spa area, SPA Resort St. Ivan Rilski in Bansko, with a zone for over 16s. And for the shortest drive, The Five Elements in Sapareva Banya, about 90 minutes from Sofia, with 10 mineral pools.

Every spa, pool and age rule in this guide was checked on the hotels' own websites on 4 November 2026. Transfer prices come from our booking system on the same day, and the price shown when you book is the one that counts. We do not publish nightly rates because they change with every date: on each hotel's page you send your dates and get a quote. Bulgaria has used the euro since 1 January 2026, so all amounts here are in euro.

Here are the spa hotels we sell, side by side, based on what each hotel publishes. "Mineral" means the hotel itself says its pools are fed by a spring.

Thermal spa hotels in Bulgaria: mineral water or a heated pool?

Bulgaria is famous for its hot springs, but not every hotel with "spa" in its name sits on one. A thermal spa hotel fills its pools with water that rises hot from the ground, and a serious one publishes the analysis: Kings' Valley lists a source temperature of 78.2°C, and Ensana Aquahouse uses water that leaves the source at 46°C. Plenty of excellent spa hotels, Kempinski among them, do not present their pools as mineral water.

If the mineral water is the reason you are going, ask the hotel directly whether the pools are spring fed and ask to see the water analysis. If you mainly want a long sauna, a warm pool after skiing and a massage, a hotel without a spring will do the job just as well. For the spa towns and public hot springs themselves, see our guide to hot springs in Bulgaria.

Bansko spa hotels: three very different stays

Bansko has the widest choice, and it works in the ski season and the rest of the year alike.

  • Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena Bansko: a 1,200 m² spa with a Finnish sauna, herbal sauna, sanarium, infrared cabin, aroma steam bath, laconium, ice fountain and a snow room. The indoor pool is 20 by 8 m at 28°C, and the outdoor pool is heated to 31°C, so you can swim outside in the snow. The spa is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00. On 22 September 2026 it was voted Bulgaria's Best Hotel Spa in the World Spa Awards public vote, for the eleventh time. The La Veranda summer pool is for guests aged 14 and over.
  • SPA Resort St. Ivan Rilski: more than 1,000 m² of spa on two levels. The indoor pool is a 20.7 m aquatonic pool at 36°C with 82 hydromassage jets, and the Finnish sauna at 80°C looks out over the Pirin mountains. A separate zone for guests over 16 has a herbal sauna, a Himalayan salt sauna, steam baths and a laconium with heated loungers. The hammam for two and the treatments cost extra. Stays are sold on half board plus or all inclusive.
  • Regnum Bansko: the spa at Regnum Bansko Mountain Resort has a heated indoor pool, Finnish sauna, aroma steam room, Turkish hammam, jacuzzi and a salt room, open daily from 09:00 to 21:00. The extra is the Regnum Banya thermal complex, with outdoor thermal pools, where hotel guests get 50% off entry.

If you would rather spend a whole day in huge thermal pools without staying there, read our guide to Pulse Therme in Bansko and Banya. From Sofia Airport to Bansko there is a private transfer from €139 per car, up to 4 passengers, about 178 km and roughly two hours.

Spa hotel in Borovets: a spa in the pine forest

Yastrebets Hotel Wellness & SPA stands in pine forest at 1,500 m. It has a 15 m indoor pool, a thermal zone and a gym, and the spa is free for hotel guests. Good to know for couples: under 16s are not allowed in the thermal zone or the gym, and can use the pool only with an adult. Borovets is close to the capital, about 70 km from Sofia, roughly an hour and ten minutes by car.

Mineral spa hotels: Sapareva Banya and Kazanlak

The Five Elements, Sapareva Banya: about 90 minutes from Sofia and 68 km from the airport. It draws on the town's geyser, where the water reaches 103°C, and has 10 indoor and outdoor pools between 18 and 40°C within a medical spa. Children under 12 may use only the pools and the facilities set aside for them, so the saunas stay calmer. Massages and treatments are priced separately.

Kings' Valley, Kazanlak: the hotel sits in the Kazanlak mineral baths area of the Rose Valley, with 4 indoor and 4 outdoor mineral pools between 28 and 39°C, a 4,000 m² spa and its own medical centre. Spa access is included in the room rate. Children under 12 cannot use the thermal zone or the gym, but have pools of their own. One thing to plan for: once you have checked out, you can no longer use the spa, so take the last swim before you hand in the key.

Velingrad spa hotels and Sandanski

Velingrad, in the Rhodope mountains, is one of Bulgaria's best known mineral water towns. We do not sell hotels there yet, but it is easy to reach: a private transfer from Sofia to Velingrad from €106 per car, about 135 km and around two hours. Sandanski, in the far south west, is about 164 km from Sofia, also around two hours. If you book a hotel in either town, ask it the same questions as in the checklist below.

The Black Sea in winter: spa hotels by the sea

The coast is empty in winter, which is exactly why it is worth a thought. Grand Hotel & SPA Primoretz in Burgas has a 3,000 m² spa with an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, aroma sauna, steam bath, salt pool, hammam and Vichy shower, and its website lists winter holiday offers. Ensana Aquahouse, in the resort of Sts. Constantine and Helena near Varna, sits on a private beach and has 11 mineral pools, 6 indoors and 5 outdoors. Each stay includes one 3 hour visit to the water area of the neighbouring Aquahouse Thermal & Beach complex. For winter dates, check that the hotel is open before you plan around it.

Adults only spa hotels in Bulgaria: what really exists

To be straight with you: none of the hotels we sell is adults only. What they do have is quiet areas with a clear age limit, which is usually enough for a peaceful sauna:

  • 16 and over: the adults only zone at St. Ivan Rilski and the thermal zone at Yastrebets.
  • 14 and over: Kempinski's summer terrace pool.
  • 12 and over: the thermal zone at Kings' Valley and the saunas at The Five Elements, where younger children stay in the pools.

If you want a hotel with no children at all, one option in Velingrad is Kashmir, which carries "Adults Only" in its name. We do not sell it. Booking sites show different minimum ages for it, so ask the hotel directly which age it accepts.

Spa break in Bulgaria: what to ask before you book

  • Is the spa included or paid? At Kings' Valley and Yastrebets access is included in the room. Elsewhere the pools and saunas may be included while treatments and the hammam are extra.
  • What are the opening hours? At Kempinski and Regnum the spa is open from 09:00 to 21:00. Worth knowing if you arrive late.
  • When are children in the pools? Ask for the age rule of each area, not just of the hotel.
  • Is there an outdoor pool open in winter? Kempinski's outdoor pool is heated to 31°C, but its terrace pool runs in summer only.
  • Is the water mineral? If it matters, ask for the water analysis.
  • Can you use the spa after check out? At Kings' Valley, for one, you cannot.

A spa weekend in Bulgaria for two

For a two night break, choose by driving time: Sapareva Banya and Borovets are about an hour to an hour and a half from Sofia, Velingrad and Bansko about two to two and a half hours. If you are staying in the capital, we have guides to spa hotels in Sofia and to a couples' spa in Sofia. And if you have no night to spare, a Bansko spa day trip from Sofia gets you into thermal pools and back to the city the same evening.

The bottom line

For luxury in Bansko choose Kempinski, for adult quiet St. Ivan Rilski, for mineral water Kings' Valley or The Five Elements, and for a spa among the pines Yastrebets. In winter, look at the coast too, in Burgas and Varna. Wherever you go, ask what the spa includes, when it opens and what the age rules are before you book. Send us your dates from the hotel's page and we will come back with a quote.
