How to get from Varna to Burgas
Varna and Burgas both have an airport, so many travellers fly into one and stay near the other, or move from one resort to another halfway through the holiday. By car it is 2 hours 10 minutes, about 130 km down the coast, and the route can be booked in either direction.
Sunny Beach is on the way: the coast road runs past Obzor and Sunny Beach, and Nessebar sits right next to Sunny Beach, on its southern side. Golden Sands is north of Varna, in the other direction.
We will say it straight away: for a couple with light bags, the bus does the job. Thirteen buses a day leave Varna Bus Station for Burgas South bus station, from 07:00 to 18:00, for €11 to €14 a person, and the ride takes about 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. They stop in Sunny Beach, not in Nessebar, and twelve a day run back from Burgas South to Varna.
The train is not the answer here: BDZ has one direct train a day each way, early in the morning and taking more than four hours, and the other trains change in Karnobat. The transfer, €110 per car, is worth it for a family or a group with suitcases, from an airport terminal or a hotel straight to the door of your hotel, with a stop on the way if you ask for it in advance. It costs more than the bus, where four adult tickets come to €44 to €56. A car takes up to 4 passengers and 2 suitcases; a large van takes up to 8 passengers and 8 suitcases.
How it works: you enter the exact pickup and drop-off addresses, an airport terminal, a hotel in Sunny Beach or an apartment in Burgas, and you see the price for them before you pay. Landing at the airport? Give your flight number when you book, and the driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. Child seats can be requested when you book, with each child's age and height. You pay 20% online by card and the rest in cash to the driver at the end of the ride; bring the exact amount, as drivers need not give change. Cancellation is free 3 days or more before the ride; later than that, the 20% is kept.
