Pamporovo Ski Resort Guide: Lift Passes, Summer, Weather
Pamporovo ski resort in the Rhodopes: who it suits, when the season opens, lift pass prices, summer, weather, getting there and where to stay.

Pamporovo is the main ski resort of the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria: about 85 km south of Plovdiv, 15 km from the town of Smolyan and three and a half to four hours by road from Sofia. The resort centre sits at around 1,500 metres and the runs come down from Snezhanka peak (1,926 m), the one with the TV tower you can see from everywhere. It has 37 km of pistes, mostly wide and gentle, which makes it one of the best places in Bulgaria for beginners and families with young children. As of 8 October 2026 the resort has not announced its 2026/27 opening date or lift prices. Last season an adult day pass cost about €53 and the lifts only opened on 28 December.

This guide covers who Pamporovo suits and how it compares with Bansko and Borovets, the pistes and lift passes, ski school and rental, summer activities, the weather through the year, getting there from Sofia and Plovdiv, and which area to stay in. All prices are in euro: Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026.
Where is Pamporovo and who is it for?
Pamporovo is not a town but a purpose-built resort: hotels spread out through spruce and pine forest, with a small central area of hotels, restaurants and bars. It lies on the mountain road between Plovdiv and Smolyan, about 10 km past the town of Chepelare. All the runs are laid out around Snezhanka peak and the lift stations are spread around its base, so queues rarely build up in one spot.
It suits first-timers, families with small children and anyone after a quiet week. There is a ski kindergarten for ages 4 to 7, a beginner area at the Malina ski centre and a safe fun zone on the snow for children aged 4 to 10. Confident skiers will find a handful of red and black runs on the north side, including "The Wall", which hosted Snowboard World Cup parallel slalom races in January 2024, but most will have skied everything within a few days. Nightlife exists, with bars and a couple of clubs, but this is not a party resort.
Pamporovo, Bansko or Borovets?
In short: Bansko is bigger, more varied and usually opens first, Borovets is the closest to Sofia, and Pamporovo is the most relaxed and beginner-friendly but the furthest from Sofia Airport. Skiing in Pamporovo: the 2026/27 season, pistes and lifts
When does the season open?
There is no official opening date for 2026/27 yet. The lifts open once there is enough snow, and the date swings a lot: in 2024 the resort opened on 7 December, while in 2025, for lack of natural snow, it opened on 28 December, with the Mechi Chal area following on 3 January 2026. Ski forecast sites project an opening in the last two weeks of December 2026, but that is an estimate, not a resort announcement. The season usually runs to the end of March or early April, depending on snow. If you are booking for early December, choose flexible cancellation and watch the resort's announcements the week before.
Pistes, lifts and snowmaking
Pamporovo has 37 km of runs of all grades, and the lift operator says about 90% of them are covered by snowmaking: around 300 snow cannons fed by a reservoir at 1,400 m. According to the resort, once temperatures drop to minus 3 or minus 4 °C they can cover more than 80% of the ski area within 72 hours. The operator lists 15 lifts, from chairlifts to drag lifts and beginner conveyor belts. A new detachable four-seat chairlift between Malina and Studenets is due to replace an old single chair for the 2026/27 season. Last season most lifts ran from 8:45 to 16:30.
In 2025/26 the Pamporovo lift pass also covered Mechi Chal, a smaller area near Chepelare with a 3 km red run, and a free shuttle linked the two at set times. Check that this still applies this winter.
Pamporovo lift pass prices
The 2026/27 prices have not been published yet: the official price page was empty on 8 October 2026. To give you a rough idea, these are approximate 2025/26 peak season prices, taken from copies of the price list published by local sites. Check the resort's price list before you go:
| Pass, 2025/26 | Adult | Youth, 12 to 21 | Child, 7 to 11 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | about €53 | about €45 | about €32 |
| Afternoon, from 11:45 | about €40 | about €34 | about €25 |
According to the resort's website, the opening offer in late December 2025 was €44.99 for an adult day pass and €27.10 for a child, and according to the resort's management the adult price dropped to €49 and then €45 in March 2026. Over 65s get a reduced rate, and we could not confirm prices for children under 7, so ask at the ticket desk or check the new price list when it comes out.
Ski school and equipment rental
The lift operator's ski school offers:
- Ski kindergarten for ages 4 to 7: at the Malina centre, half or full day, with indoor and outdoor play, first turns on skis, sledging and lunch.
- Group lessons from age 7: four hours of skiing or two hours of snowboarding a day, in groups of 10 to 12, sold as packages with equipment and lift pass, or with the lift pass only if you bring your own kit.
- Private lessons or small groups of up to four: one to four hours a day, the fastest way to progress in the first days.
Rental shops are at the ski centres, and there is ski storage next to the slopes. Our advice: pick up your equipment on the afternoon you arrive so you do not lose the first morning, and book lessons ahead over Christmas and New Year. We do not currently sell ski lessons in Pamporovo, so book them with the resort's school and ask which languages the instructors speak.
Pamporovo in summer
In summer Pamporovo becomes a quiet mountain resort, cool when the lowlands are hot. In 2026 the summer season opened on 19 June: the chairlift to Snezhanka peak and the bike park ran until 22 September, and the adventure park by the reservoir opened daily until 13 September, then at weekends and on holidays until 1 November.
- Adventure park: a 360 m zip line over the water, a climbing wall with 8 routes, a 13-element rope course and sport fishing.
- Snezhanka peak: ride the chairlift up to the TV tower; on a clear day the view reaches the Greek border.
- Hiking and biking: marked forest trails, Nordic walking, mountain biking and, late in summer, mushroom and berry picking.
- Horse riding: near Smolyan you can book a private horse riding tour to Perelik peak, the highest summit of the Rhodopes (2,191 m): two to four hours with a local guide and lunch, from €399 per guest (the same price for adults and children). It is meant for riders with some experience, the guide speaks English and Bulgarian, and you make your own way to the meeting point.
Below the peak on the Smolyan side lie the Smolyan Lakes, with a chairlift up to Snezhanka. The lakes, caves, villages and the rest of the region are covered in our Rhodope Mountains guide.

Pamporovo has a reputation as Bulgaria's sunniest mountain resort, and the operator claims more than 240 sunny days a year. Altitude still matters, so pack a warm layer for summer evenings. These are approximate averages, not a forecast:
| Season | Daytime temperature | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Winter, December to February | About 1 to 3 °C, below freezing at night; January averages around minus 3 °C | Snow is usually deepest in February and March; December is not guaranteed |
| Spring, March to May | About 6 to 16 °C | Still skiing in March; the season ends in April as the snow turns wet and heavy |
| Summer, June to August | About 20 to 23 °C | Cool evenings, ideal hiking weather |
| Autumn, September to November | From about 19 °C in September down to about 8 °C in November | Quiet and colourful; most facilities close on weekdays |
Before you set off, check an up-to-date forecast and the webcams on the resort's official website.
How to get to Pamporovo from Sofia and Plovdiv
From Sofia: about 240 km. Take the Trakia motorway towards Plovdiv, turn off for Asenovgrad and climb the mountain road through Chepelare. The resort puts the drive at three and a half to four hours; in winter plan for the upper end.
From Plovdiv: about 85 km, an hour and a half to two hours, most of it on a winding mountain road. From Plovdiv Airport it is about 80 km and roughly two hours.
We do not yet have a fixed-price route to Pamporovo itself, but you can request a private transfer to Pamporovo and we will come back with a price. For the area we have fixed prices per vehicle, not per person (as of 8 October 2026):
- Sofia Airport to Smolyan transfer: from €248 per vehicle, about three and a half hours.
- Plovdiv to Smolyan transfer: from €105 per vehicle, about two hours.
- Want to break the journey? A Sofia Airport to Plovdiv transfer starts at €140 per vehicle: spend a night in Plovdiv's old town and head up the mountain the next day.
Rental car: gives you freedom to explore the Rhodopes, but in winter the road to Pamporovo is steep and sometimes snowy. Only drive it with snow experience, winter tyres and chains in the car. If that is you, you can book a rental car with us.
Bus: there are services from Plovdiv taking about two hours, with few departures a day. With ski bags and children it is hard work, so check the timetable close to your trip.
Where to stay in Pamporovo
We do not list Pamporovo hotels on our site yet, so here is how to choose an area:
- Next to the Studenets and Malina ski centres: walk to the lifts. Malina is the easiest base for families with small children, as the kindergarten and beginner area are there.
- The central area: the most restaurants and bars within walking distance. The lift operator's own hotels, Perelik and Orlovets, run a shuttle to the ski centres.
- Chepelare, about 10 km north: a real town, usually cheaper and close to Mechi Chal. You need a car or the shuttle to reach Pamporovo.
- Smolyan, about 15 km south: a full-service town near the lakes and the end point of our transfer routes. Better for summer, or for skiers with a car.
Over Christmas and New Year the hotels near the lifts fill up first, so book early and with flexible cancellation.
The bottom line
Pamporovo is a good choice for a first ski holiday, for families with young children and for a quiet summer in the mountains. The catch is the journey: from Sofia it takes the best part of a day, so it pairs well with a night in Plovdiv. If skiing is the priority and you are flying into Sofia for a long weekend, Borovets saves you about two hours each way. You can book your transfer to the area and the summer horse ride with us.
