Things to do in Bansko in summer: the gondola and summer park, a 400 m water slide, the old town, Pirin lakes and outdoor tours. 2026 prices and dates.

Bansko in Summer: 12 Things to Do When There Is No Snow

Bansko in summer is a quiet, green mountain town, and most of what you do there happens outdoors: you ride the gondola up to the summer park at Banderishka Polyana with its 400 m water slide, wander the cobbled old town, hike to the glacial lakes of the Pirin mountains, go horse riding or take a jeep to the viewpoints, and finish in hot mineral pools. Below are 12 things to do in Bansko in summer, with the operators' official 2026 prices and our own live prices. One thing to know before you pick dates: the gondola only runs every day from late June to early September. Outside that window it makes a single trip up in the morning and a single trip down in the afternoon, on weekdays only. Everything you can book through us is under all activities in Bansko.

All prices are in euro: Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Gondola, summer park, train and bus prices are the operators' own, as published for summer 2026. Our activity and transfer prices were read from our booking system on 24 October 2026, and the price shown when you book is the one that counts. Operators publish their 2027 summer dates in spring, and we will update this page then.

Bansko gondola in summer: Banderishka Polyana and the summer park

1. Ride the gondola to Banderishka Polyana

The gondola leaves from the bottom station in town and climbs about 6 km to Banderishka Polyana, at roughly 1,600 m and some 700 m above Bansko. It is cooler up there, the Pirin peaks are right in front of you, and that is where all the summer attractions are. In summer 2026 the gondola ran daily from 27 June to 6 September, in both directions, from 08:00 to 16:30: the last ride up from Bansko was at 16:00 and the last ride down at 16:30.

Gondola ticket, summer 2026ReturnOne way
Adult€27€24
Student, 12 to 18€24€21
Child, 7 to 11€19€16
Child up to 6€0.60€0.60

Children up to 6 ride only with an adult, and one adult can take up to two of them. If you plan several attractions at the top, look at the daily package: €59 for adults and €38 for children aged 8 to 12, covering the return gondola, one run on the water slide and five runs on the tubing chute or the bag jump. Children aged 8 to 12 need an accompanying adult and proof of age.

Bansko water slide: 400 m on the mountain

The summer water slide at Banderishka Polyana is 400 m long, and a towel is included. One run costs €16 for adults and €11 for children aged 8 to 12, three runs €46 and €27, plus a €5.50 deposit on the chip bracelet. Next to it are the tubing chute (€11 adults, €8 children, minimum height 130 cm) and mini golf at €8 a game. For small children there is an inflatable castle and a climbing tower, €8 for 20 minutes, with weight limits of 35 kg and 60 kg.

Mountain bikes, e-bikes and the downhill park

Bikes go up on the gondola: a downhill bike day pass costs €40 for adults and €32 for children aged 7 to 11. No bike? Rent one at the top: a mountain bike is €27 for two hours, an e-bike €48 for two hours or €70 for eight, and a helmet €8. There are guided e-bike tours too, for example a loop from Bansko to Banya and Dobrinishte and back, 3 to 4 hours, for €105.

2. The old town and its house museums

Bansko's heart is not the gondola area but the cobbled lanes of the old town, between fortified stone houses with heavy wooden gates. Holy Trinity Church was built in 1835, and its bell tower, about 30 m tall, was added in 1850 and is now the town's symbol. Next door is the Neofit Rilski House Museum, and a few lanes on, Velyanova House with its carved wooden ceilings. Check the closing days, from the official Bansko museums site: Neofit Rilski House opens 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 and closes on Tuesday, and Velyanova House opens Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, closing on Sunday and Monday. An adult ticket is €3, under 18s and students pay €2, and a family ticket is €5. A summer evening in the old town, with dinner in a mehana (a traditional Bulgarian tavern), is half the point of coming.

3. Hot mineral pools at Pulse Therme Banya

About ten minutes' drive from Bansko, in the village of Banya, Pulse Therme has 12 pools, 4 saunas and 3 steam rooms fed by mineral water. A Pulse Therme Banya ticket costs €36 with us for a 4 hour half day and €44 for a full day, 25% more at weekends. Note that our ticket is for ages 14 and up, so this is one for the adults or teenagers. How to pair it with a morning in the old town is in our Bansko and Pulse Therme spa day.

4. Horse riding in the forest

Horse riding in the forest near Bansko means an hour in the saddle on woodland trails plus about ten minutes' transfer each way, meeting at the host's office or picked up from your hotel. From age 6, minimum 3 riders, with solo rides possible for an extra fee. It costs €45 per person, and children pay the same as adults. Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed shoes.

5. Jeep safari to viewpoints and waterfalls

The jeep safari to viewpoints and waterfalls leaves Bansko at 09:00 for about two hours on dirt tracks: waterfalls off the usual trails, the ruins of an ancient town and, on clear days, views of three ranges, Pirin, Rila and the Rhodopes. It suits all ages, costs €40 per person, and children pay the adult price. The ride is bumpy, so think twice if you have a sensitive back or neck.

6. Climbing on real rock

Swap the indoor wall for guided climbing on natural rock in the forest near Bansko: up to two hours, with a briefing and gear sorted with your instructor, and no experience needed. €45 per person, minimum 3, hotel pickup. Bring sportswear, closed shoes and a windbreaker.

7. A forest picnic cooked on hot stones

One of the most Bulgarian things you can do in summer: a forest picnic cooked on hot stones, 3 to 4 hours around a fire, with meat, fish and vegetables grilled on stones, salads, homemade wine and rakia, all included. €45 per person, all ages welcome, but it needs at least 6 people, so it works best for an extended family or two families together. It depends on the weather, and live Bulgarian music can be added for a fee.

8. The narrow gauge railway

Bansko sits on the Septemvri to Dobrinishte line, the only narrow gauge railway still running in Bulgaria: 125 km of mountains and forest, through Avramovo, the highest station in the Balkans at about 1,267 m. Four trains run each way every day. The full ride to Septemvri takes around four and a half hours, so most visitors do a section: Dobrinishte is just 11 minutes away, or ride up the valley past Razlog and come back. On the national railway timetable for 24 October 2026, trains left Bansko for Septemvri at 07:02, 10:38, 14:36 and 17:57. The summer timetable can differ and fares are dynamic, so check the Bulgarian State Railways site before you go.

9. Dobrinishte and its springs

Dobrinishte, about 6 km from Bansko, is a small spa town with 17 mineral springs between 30 and 43°C, and the road from there climbs to Gotse Delchev hut and the Bezbog chairlift, another gateway into the Pirin. You can get there by the narrow gauge train, by bike or by a short taxi ride. The Bezbog lift and the walk to Popovo lake are covered in our guide to the Pirin mountains.

10. Lakes and peaks in the Pirin

The mountains are why most people come to Bansko in summer: glacial lakes and peaks above 2,900 m, a short drive from town. The easiest start is our three lakes hike from Bansko: the host drives you to Vihren hut, and from there you walk 4 to 6 hours past three lakes, with a hot coffee on the way. €45 per person, children at the adult price, minimum 3, and the route is rated hard. A public bus also runs from Bansko to the hut from 1 June to 30 October 2026, €8 each way, leaving the railway station at 08:30, 13:20 and 17:00. If you want the summit itself, it is all in our Vihren peak hike guide, including the rescue numbers: 1470 closed in August 2026, so call 112.

11. Rafting and ATV tours

Rafting on the Struma starts in the Kresna gorge, about 35 km from Bansko: see rafting in Bulgaria. If you would rather drive yourself on dirt tracks, ages and prices are in ATV tours in Bansko and Borovets.

12. Day trips, from Melnik to the stone villages

A day without mountains? Melnik, the little wine town next to Rozhen Monastery, is about two hours south: Melnik and Rozhen from Bansko. And the stone villages of Kovachevitsa and Leshten make a slow day among old stone houses and cobbled lanes: Kovachevitsa and Leshten.

Bansko with kids in summer: what suits which age, and a family day costed

Bansko works well with children in summer, as long as you match the activity to the age:

  • Up to 6: the gondola at €0.60, the inflatable castle and mini golf at the top, plus the jeep safari and the forest picnic, both open to all ages.
  • From 6: horse riding.
  • From 8: the water slide and the daily package at the child price; the tubing chute needs a height of at least 130 cm.
  • From 14: Pulse Therme Banya.

On our Bansko activities children pay the adult price. Here is a sample day for a family with a 10 year old and a 6 year old in mid July, at 2026 prices:

09:00 to 11:00Jeep safari4 people at €40€160

Bansko in June, July, August and September: what is open when

Same town, four quite different months. This is the 2026 pattern; the 2027 dates are published in spring:

  • June: until 26 June the gondola runs Monday to Friday only, one trip up at 08:00 and one down at 16:30, and the Banderishka attractions are still closed. From 27 June everything opens daily. The Vihren hut bus starts on 1 June, and early in the season there can still be snow on the high trails, so ask your host before a lakes hike.
  • July: peak season begins. The gondola and the summer park run daily, and from 10 July to 15 September 2026 the road to Vihren hut was closed to private cars by day, while the bus kept running. The details are in our Vihren guide.
  • August: festival month and the driest month of the year. The town is busier, so book rooms and activities early.
  • September: until 6 September everything is still open daily. From 7 September the gondola goes back to weekdays only, one trip up and one down, and the Banderishka season ends. On the plus side the trails are quiet and the air is clear, which makes it a great month for hiking.

Bansko Jazz Festival

The jazz festival is Bansko's big summer event. The 29th edition ran from 31 July to 9 August 2026, with 83 acts from more than 20 countries on four stages, and the main stage on the town square starting in the evening. In past years the main stage was free to attend, but check the 2027 programme and entry terms once they are out. Late August also brings Bansko Opera Fest, held on 27 to 29 August in 2026.

How warm Bansko gets in summer and what to pack is in our Bansko weather guide. In short: around 27°C by day in July and August, and you will want a sweater in the evening.

What is closed in Bansko in summer

  • The ski lifts: in summer only the gondola runs for visitors. The Banderitsa lifts open only for groups of more than 40, on request in advance.
  • The gondola outside peak season: before 27 June and after 6 September the official timetable lists Monday to Friday only, with one trip up and one down.
  • The Vihren hut road by day: from July to mid September, between 08:00 and 16:00, you go up by bus, by permitted taxi or with your host.
  • Museums early in the week: several houses close on Sunday and Monday, and Neofit Rilski House on Tuesday.

Bansko in summer: where to stay and how to get there

There are two areas to choose from. Near the gondola is handy if you plan several days at Banderishka and in the mountains; the old town suits those who want to walk out to restaurants in the evening. Our hotels in Bansko are all in one place, and in August, during the festivals, book early.

Bansko is about 155 km from Sofia, two to two and a half hours by road. A private transfer from Sofia to Bansko starts with us from €121 per car for up to 4 passengers, and from Sofia Airport from €124 per car. In town you can manage without a car: the bus to Vihren hut, the narrow gauge train to Dobrinishte, and on many of our activities you meet at the host's office or get picked up from your hotel. When you book, you pay 20% online and the rest to the host at the end of the activity. For Bansko in winter, skiing and the town in general, see our complete guide to Bansko.
